A quick look at the repair I worked on this afternoon. Took out all of the outer drive side spokes. If you haven't checked your der lately here's a friendly reminder.

What caused that damage to the spokes? I'm not following how the derailler is involved.
Thetop set screw was out of adjustment and allowed the chain to come off the top cog. The chain then got wedged into the space between the cog and the spokes, and was ridden forward. The chain cut through the spokes, breaking several of them, and leaving the marks you see on the others.
This could have been in large part prevented if a "pie plate" spoke protector was on the wheel, or if the der adjustment had been checked.
